The global commercial insurance market moved further in buyers’ favor during the second quarter of 2026, with overall rates falling 6%, according to Marsh’s Global Insurance Market Index (GIMI). The latest decline followed a 5% reduction in the previous quarter and marked the eighth consecutive quarterly decrease in global composite rates.
The shift was broad, with most major insurance lines recording lower pricing. Property insurance posted the largest decline, falling 12% as increased capacity and supportive reinsurance conditions gave insurers more room to compete for business.
Casualty insurance moved in the opposite direction. Global casualty rates rose 2%, making it the only major product category to register an overall increase. The U.S. market was the main driver, where casualty pricing climbed 7% amid continued concerns over claims severity and litigation.
Other specialty segments also recorded reductions. Financial and professional lines declined 3%, compared with a 5% decrease in the preceding quarter, while cyber insurance rates dropped 4%. The cyber market has now recorded rate reductions for 12 straight quarters, supported by steady capacity and competition among insurers.
The report also noted that insurance buyers were increasingly able to secure broader coverage, higher limits and lower retentions alongside lower pricing. Even so, results continued to differ according to individual risk characteristics, industry exposure, geography and catastrophe vulnerability.
