The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has made $11.4 million available to states and U.S. territories for projects aimed at improving the safety of dams considered capable of posing serious risks to people and property. The funding opportunity was announced on August 5, 2026.

The money will be distributed through FEMA’s Rehabilitation of High Hazard Potential Dams grant program, which supports work on dams that require substantial improvements. Eligible projects can involve repairing, replacing, rebuilding or removing structures that threaten communities.

FEMA said the program is particularly important for communities that depend on dams as part of their protection against potentially catastrophic flooding. Strengthening vulnerable structures can reduce the consequences of dam failures while improving broader der preparedness and mitigation efforts.

The federal agency emphasized the role of reliable dam infrastructure in protecting both residents and essential facilities. “One of the most powerful ways communities can protect lives and critical infrastructure is through the presence of safe, durable dams,” said FEMA’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator.

The new funding gives participating states and territories an opportunity to address high-priority dam safety needs before structural problems develop into larger emergencies. FEMA’s program is designed around disaster prevention as well as infrastructure rehabilitation, linking dam improvements with long-term community resilience.

For communities located downstream from high-hazard dams, maintaining these structures can be critical to reducing potential flood impacts. The latest federal funding therefore places additional resources behind efforts to improve dam conditions and strengthen public safety.
